ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The Chair on Consumer Law and Practice, National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, is pleased to announce its 1st Online Moot Court Competition on Consumer Law and Practice 2026. The competition invites law students from across the country to engage with contemporary issues in consumer protection law through rigorous written and oral advocacy, and provides a platform to sharpen research, drafting, and argumentation skills in a competitive, professional setting.

How to Register?

All teams must complete the registration process on or before the last date of registration.

Eligibility

  • Open to students currently enrolled in a B.A. LL.B. or LL.B. programme.
  • Both team members must belong to the same college/university.
  • Only one team per college/university is permitted.

Registration Steps:

Step 1: Pay the Registration Fee
Pay the prescribed registration fee of ₹2,000 per team through the designated payment mode.

Step 2: Fill the Google Form
Complete the registration form with the required details of both team members.

Step 3: Upload Payment Receipt
Attach a clear copy of the payment receipt/proof of payment in the Google Form.

Step 4: Upload Authorization Letter
Attach an authorization letter issued by the participating college/university.

Step 5: Keep the Receipt Safe
Retain the payment receipt and registration confirmation for future reference.

Note: Registration will be treated as complete only upon submission of the Google Form, payment receipt, and authorization letter within the prescribed deadline.

RULES FOR MEMORIAL SUBMISSION

  1. Format
  • Memorials shall be prepared on A4 size paper, in Times New Roman font, 12 pt for the main text and 10 pt for footnotes, with 1.5-line spacing and 1-inch margins on all sides.
  • Each team shall prepare and submit two memorials: one on behalf of the Petitioner/Complainant and one on behalf of the Respondent/Opposite Party.
  • The cover page and body of the memorial must not disclose the name, institution, or identity of the team; only the team code allotted at the time of registration is to be used throughout.
  • Citation must follow a uniform, consistent style (e.g., the latest edition of the Bluebook or OSCOLA) throughout the memorial.
  • Memorials must be paginated, and all pages other than the cover page must bear the team code as a header or footer.
  1. Word Limit
  • The Arguments Advanced section of each memorial shall not exceed 3,000 words, excluding the Cover Page, Table of Contents, Index of Authorities, Statement of Jurisdiction, Statement of Facts, Issues Raised, Summary of Arguments, Prayer, and footnotes.
  • A tolerance of 10% over the prescribed limit is permitted; memorials exceeding this tolerance shall attract a deduction of marks at the discretion of the evaluators.
  1. Online Submission
  • Memorials must be submitted only in PDF format (file naming convention: TeamCode_Petitioner.pdf / TeamCode_Respondent.pdf) through the official submission link / email ID to be circulated to registered teams.
  • Submission must be completed before deadline. Penalties for late submissions as stated above will apply.
  • No physical/hard copies of the memorial are required, as the competition is conducted entirely online.
  1. Contents of the Memorial
  • Cover Page (with team code only) — Table of Contents — List of Abbreviations — Index of Authorities — Statement of Jurisdiction — Statement of Facts — Issues Raised — Summary of Arguments — Arguments Advanced — Prayer.
  • Each memorial must be internally consistent, properly indexed, and free of extraneous facts not found in the moot proposition.
  1. Plagiarism and AI-Generated Content Check
  • All memorials will be screened through plagiarism-detection software; a similarity index (excluding footnotes, citations, and standard legal phraseology) exceeding 10% shall attract penal deduction of marks, and a similarity index exceeding 15% shall render the memorial liable for disqualification.
  • All memorials will also be screened through AI-content detection software; an AI-generated content score exceeding 10% shall attract penal deduction of marks, and a score exceeding 15% shall render the memorial liable for disqualification.
  • The unacknowledged or substantial use of AI-generation tools (e.g., ChatGPT and similar tools) to draft arguments, facts, or analysis is not permitted beyond the threshold specified above. Teams may use such tools only in a limited, incidental manner (e.g., grammar/language checks) that does not affect substantive content.
  • Teams may be required to submit a signed self-declaration/certificate of originality along with their memorials, affirming that the work is their own and discloses any limited use of AI tools.
  1. Disqualification Rules
  • A team shall be liable for disqualification from the competition if it: discloses its identity anywhere in the memorial or during oral rounds; exceeds the plagiarism threshold (15%) or the AI-generated content threshold (15%) specified above; submits a memorial after the late-submission window; is found to have copied, shared, or colluded on memorials with another team; fails to pay the registration fee by the prescribed deadline; or is found to have engaged in any other unfair means or misconduct.
  • The decision of the Organising Committee on all matters of disqualification shall be final and binding on all participating teams.

COMPETITION FORMAT & ADVANCEMENT CRITERIA

The competition follows a knock-out format across four stages, moving from written memorials to oral advocacy:

At every oral round, advancement is determined solely on the basis of marks scored by teams in that round.

The Winning and Runner-Up teams of the Finals will be conferred cash prizes and certificates as follows:

All participating teams and speakers will additionally be eligible for certificates of participation/achievement as applicable.

RESULTS & PRIZE DISTRIBUTION

  • Results will be declared and prizes distributed on 24th December 2026 in New Delhi, at the National Consumer Rights Day event organised by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India.
  • The exact venue in Delhi will be announced at a later date.
  • Winning and Runner-Up teams will need to make their own arrangements to travel to Delhi to receive their awards in person.

KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER

  • Registration fee: ₹2,000 per team, payable by 15th October 2026.
  • Selection to Octa-Finals (8 teams) is based on memorial marks of both sides (Petitioner and Respondent).
  • From the Octa-Finals onward, advancement is based purely on oral round marks.
  • Late memorial submissions attract a penalty of 1.5 marks per day of delay, up to a maximum of two days.
  • Winners receive ₹20,000; Runners-up receive ₹15,000, along with certificates.
